Pimple patches: when they help, and when they make it worse
Hydrocolloid works on exactly one kind of spot. Using them on the wrong stage is why people say they did nothing.

Hydrocolloid patches absorb fluid. That is the whole mechanism. They are excellent on a spot that has come to a head and genuinely unhelpful on a deep, closed nodule.
Use a patch when
- The spot is open, weeping or has just been drained.
- You need to stop yourself picking at it overnight.
- You want to keep it clean and flat under makeup the next morning.
Skip the patch when
- It is a hard lump under the skin with no surface.
- The area is broadly inflamed rather than one distinct spot.
- You have applied a strong active underneath — occlusion will drive it deeper than you intended.
For everything patches cannot reach, the boring answer works better: a gentle cleanser, a consistent active, and not touching your face for a week.

Wish I had read the “skip the patch when” list two years ago. I was putting them on closed bumps for weeks.
